Deep space stellar navigation successfully conducted for 1st time

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft has conducted first-ever successful deep space stellar navigation test. While travelling through the Kuiper Belt, which is 704 million km away from Earth, it captured images of nearby stars Proxima Centauri and Wolf 359. A team of astronomers used the stars' positions and 3D model of the solar neighborhood to calculate spacecraft's position.
