ChatGPT's maker OpenAI claimed that rival Chinese AI startup DeepSeek used OpenAI's proprietary models to train its model. OpenAI said it has evidence of "distillation", a technique to obtain better performance on smaller models by using outputs from larger, more capable ones. It's a common practice, however, DeepSeek doing it to build its own rival model breaches OpenAI's terms.
