Despite the government's proposed ₹7.8 lakh crore allocation for the defence sector in the Union Budget 2026, the defence stock index has dropped by 304.85 points or 3.72% on February 1, as per NSE. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also proposed an exemption of basic customs duty on components and parts required for the manufacture of civilian, training and other aircraft.
