Delhi became capital of India on this day

Delhi was formally inaugurated as the capital of British India by Viceroy and Governor-General of India, Lord Irwin, on February 13, 1931. Emperor of India, George V, had laid the foundation stone of Delhi on December 12, 1911. The British government had opined that ruling India from Delhi was easier and convenient than ruling it from Calcutta (Kolkata).
