Austria will ban girls under 14 from wearing burqas in schools, calling it "a symbol of oppression". Claudia Plakolm, Federal Minister for Europe, said, "As the federal government, we want to protect girls and enable them to grow up freely, visibly, and self-determinedly." She added the ban will be introduced in two phases, starting from the 2026 semester break.
