The Alphonso mango, named after Portuguese general Afonso de Albuquerque, originated from grafting techniques introduced during Portuguese rule in western India. Known for its rich aroma and saffron-colored pulp, it is primarily grown in Maharashtra. With a GI tag boosting exports, Alphonso mango’s global demand is expected to reach ₹1,000 crore by 2030.
