DNA Barcoding reveals a rare new species in India’s coastal waters

Kerala's mangroves have a new star: Alpheus madhusoodanai. This snapping shrimp was first caught in 2007 by researchers at CUSAT, Cochin, but recent DNA barcoding has confirmed it as a new species. It is named after Dr B Madhusoodhana Kurup, in recognition of his lifelong work in fish biodiversity and taxonomy, a beautiful, loud addition to marine records.
