Does gestational diabetes end after birth?
short by / on Monday, 23 February, 2026
For most women, gestational diabetes resolves after giving birth. Once the placenta is delivered, the hormones that contributed to insulin resistance are no longer present in the mother’s body, and the blood sugar levels return to pre-pregnancy levels. However, this doesn’t lower the risk forever. According to studies, about 50% of women with GDM may develop type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years.
