The Dominican Republic's Environment Minister, Orlando Jorge Mera, was shot dead on Monday in his office by a close friend, the government said. Mera, son of former President Salvador Blanco, was shot by businessman Miguel Cruz, who was arrested at a church after telling a priest he committed a crime and handed over a gun to him, authorities said.
