Earth hit by solar storm blowing at 600 km per second
short by Daisy Mowke / on Tuesday, 2 September, 2025
A powerful blast of solar wind, clocking speeds over 600 km per second, struck Earth's magnetic field on September 1. The event was triggered by a rare cannibal CME, where one coronal mass ejection from Sun overtakes and merges with another for stronger burst. Cannibal CMEs are particularly hazardous because their merged structure contains enhanced magnetic fields and denser plasma.
