Earthquakes act like batteries to power underground life: Study
short by Swati Dubey / on Monday, 4 August, 2025
Rock fractures caused by earthquakes could power microbes living deep within the Earth's crust, Chinese scientists have found. These fractures through crustal faulting split water into energy-rich compounds, enabling life deep below without sunlight. As per researchers, the process produces redox pairs and drives iron cycling, offering a continuous energy source.
