Chile's Atacama Desert, the driest non-polar desert on Earth, houses a 36-foot-tall solitary sculpture in the shape of a hand, called "Mano Del Desierto" or "Hand of the Desert." Designed by sculptor Mario Irarrázabal and finished in 1992, the monument is situated 75 kilometres away from nearest city Antofagasta. Irarrázabal earlier built a similar structure on a beach in Uruguay.
