Abebe Bikila from Ethiopia won the gold medal in a marathon at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome running barefoot. He arrived in Rome with one pair of running shoes which got destroyed during training. Unable to find shoes that fit him, he decided to run barefoot. Notably, he became the first Sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal.
