Europe allows tech firms to scan private messages without user consent
short by Ashley Paul / on Friday, 10 July, 2026
The European Parliament passed a law that allows tech companies to voluntarily scan users' private messages for child sexual abuse material, even if the user hasn't given their consent. The law was passed despite a majority of present members voting against it, as rules mandate an absolute majority to reject a law. WhatsApp and Signal's end-to-end encrypted chats remain exempt.
