Ramesh Kharmale, an ex-Army personnel in Maharashtra, dug 70 pits using a spade on mountain and saved 8 lakh litres of rainwater. He took the step after noticing that hills were losing green cover and with it, their ability to hold water. Ramesh had joined the forest department as forest guard after retiring from Army.
