Excessive intake of salt-preserved foods like pickles can cause mucosal irritation and inflammation of the oral cavity, potentially contributing to precancerous changes and elevated oral cancer risk, Dietitian Garima noted. Although evidence is not definitive, chronic high-salt diets are biologically plausible risk factors due to tissue damage and carcinogen formation.
