Ex-Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui known as 'Mr Democracy' dies at 97

Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui, known as "Mr Democracy" for bringing direct elections and other democratic changes to the island, has died at 97. Lee became Taiwan's first democratically elected president in March 1996 in a landslide victory. During an election rally, Lee had said he hoped for Taiwan to be "a country of democracy, freedom, human rights and dignity".
