Fiji declares national HIV emergency; 1 in 60 people now has virus
Fiji has declared a national HIV emergency amid a sharp rise in cases. The country recorded 2,016 new HIV diagnoses in 2025, 16 times the number in 2019. An estimated one in 60 adults now lives with HIV. Fiji’s HIV crisis is caused by multiple factors, but injecting drug use has become a major and rapidly accelerating route of transmission.
