Zohran Kwame Mamdani, the 29-year-old son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan academician Mahmood Mamdani, won a seat in New York State Assembly. Zohran, along with fellow Queens resident Jenifer Rajkumar, became one of the first South Asians to win a seat in NY assembly. A Democratic Socialist, Zohran ran unopposed to represent NY's 36th Assembly District in Astoria.
