The first ever known crossword puzzle in the world was published in a US-based newspaper 'New York World' on December 21, 1913. It was a diamond-shaped grid, created by Arthur Wynne. While the puzzle was initially called 'word-cross', it was renamed as 'crossword' a few weeks later. Wynne experimented with many shapes before finally settling on the rectangular grid.
