First man to reach Everest's peak also stood at both poles

New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, was the first to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Hillary reached the South Pole overland in 1958 and flew with astronaut Neil Armstrong aboard a ski plane to land at the North Pole in 1985, becoming the first to stand at both poles and Everest's summit.
