The Reserve Bank of India, which was established on April 1, 1935, issued its first note worth ₹5 in January 1938. The note had a portrait of King George VI. This was followed by the introduction of ₹10 notes in February, ₹100 notes in March and ₹1,000 and ₹10,000 notes in June 1938.
