The first ship passed through the Suez Canal on February 17, 1867. Linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, the 163 kilometer-long canal allows ships to travel between Europe and Asia without having to circumnavigate Africa. Every year about 15,000 ships pass through the Suez Canal, taking about eleven to sixteen hours.
