First sulphur-eating shipworm found in Philippines

Scientists have discovered the first-ever giant shipworm in muddy lagoons in the Philippines. The baseball bat-sized animal's existence had been known for more than 200 years due to three-to-five-foot-long fossils. The worm relies on food-making bacteria living in their gills that use hydrogen sulphide as energy to produce organic carbon that feeds the shipworm, scientists said.
