Five constitutional writs and their purposes

Indian law provides five writs as constitutional remedies: habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition, certiorari and quo warranto. Habeas corpus addresses illegal detention, Mandamus compels performance of a duty, and Prohibition stops a lower court acting without jurisdiction. Certiorari cancels decisions where power is exceeded, while Quo warranto questions authority to hold a public post.
