Folic acid has an important role in the prevention of birth defects during pregnancy, particularly neural tube defects or NTDs. These defects like anencephaly and spina bifida, occur due to incomplete development of the neural tube, which eventually forms the brain and spinal cord of the fetus. The demand for folic acid increases to support fetal growth and development.
