Football once kick-started a war in Central America

Central American nations El Salvador and Honduras fought a '100 Hour War' in 1969, which was sparked by football. Although there were numerous issues between the two nations, the tensions escalated in the World Cup qualifier matches, and El Salvador eventually invaded Honduras. Although physical fighting ended after a short while, a peace treaty was signed 11 years later.
