Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life in prison for leading an insurrection during his failed attempt to place the country under martial law in December 2024. He is the first elected head of state in the country's democratic era to receive the maximum custodial sentence. Prosecutors had sought death penalty for Yoon.
