Freshwater species face extinction threat

This first ever global assessment of freshwater animals has found that one quarter of the 23,496 freshwater species surveyed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species are under the threat of extinction. Western Ghats in India are one of the top hotspots showing the greatest threat. Pollution, dams and water extraction are to blame.
