Friedrich Merz failed to garner the parliamentary majority needed to become German Chancellor in the first round of voting on Tuesday. Merz needed at least 316 votes to become chancellor and only 310 members of parliament voted in his favour. The lower house of parliament now has 14 days to elect Merz or another candidate chancellor with an outright majority
