Scientists have found that the marsupial frog, Gastrotheca mittaliiti, carries its young in a natural pouch on its back. The species found in the Peruvian Amazon, measuring just 2.7 to 3.3 cm, has small protuberances on its back and protects eggs until they develop into froglets, unlike most frogs. This reduces dependence on the external environment and increases survival chances.
