WHO defines a rare disease as one that affects fewer than 65 in 100,000 people. India records 450 rare diseases across tertiary hospitals, impacting 60 million people. Medical Genetics expert Dr Anup Rawool highlighted genetic counselling's role in early diagnosis. He added that advances like NIPT, newborn screening, and genomics are revolutionising rare disease management.
