Germany recorded 5,120 heat-related deaths in 2026, with most occurring in late June as Europe faced severe heatwave. Of the total, 4,270 deaths were among people aged 75 and older. More women than men died, mainly because they make up a larger share of the very elderly. Western Europe recorded its hottest June on record, with temperatures 3°C above normal.
