Goldfish of sizes up to 30 cm and weighing up to​ 2 kg have been found in the river Vasse near Perth, Australia. Researchers have said these fish, released into the wild by pet owners, can have a damaging impact on river ecosystems. They eat the spawn of native fish and uproot plants and stir sediment on the river bed.
