Dutch distance runner Sifan Hassan wore a hijab during the medal ceremony at the Paris Olympics. France had banned competitors from wearing the head covering that is conventionally worn by Muslim women. Many praised the gesture by Hassan, who set a new Olympic record in the women's marathon and also won bronze medals in 5,000m and 10,000m events.
