Google honours 'father of hand hygiene' with doodle amid COVID-19 pandemic

Google on Friday honoured Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis with a doodle. Semmelweis is widely attributed as the first person to discover the medical benefits of handwashing. On this day in 1847, he was appointed as Chief Resident in Vienna General Hospital's maternity clinic, where he deduced and demonstrated that requiring doctors to disinfect their hands vastly reduced disease transmission.
