Petroleum Ministry accepted that 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol causes mileage to drop by up to 6% due to lower energy density of ethanol than petrol. It said mileage drop can be minimised with improved engine tuning and E20-compatible materials' use, which leading automobile manufacturers adopted in April 2023. It denied that E20 causes "drastic drop in fuel efficiency".
