In a recent notification, the government has prohibited the import of e-commerce goods as 'gifts' to evade customs duty. Earlier, citizens could receive gifts valued up to ₹5,000 without paying duties. The move is expected to affect Chinese e-tailers including SheIn, Club Factory and AliExpress that were reported to have been using the method to ship cheaper imports to India.
