The government is considering a proposal to bring back merchant discount rate (MDR) charges on UPI and RuPay-powered debit card transactions, the ET reported. MDR is a fee paid by the merchant to the bank for processing real-time payments. The fee could be reimposed on merchants with an annual GST-based turnover of more than ₹40 lakh.
