The Centre on Monday constituted a committee to consider granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in Assam. The committee, in consultation with the Assam Government, will suggest the modalities for shifting the existing reservation for these communities from OBC to ST. The communities under consideration are Koch Rajbongshi, Moran, Matak, Tai Ahom, Chutia and Adivasi (Tea Tribes).
