Chinese researchers developed a GPS-free navigation system that helps robots traverse collapsed buildings and dense forests. It comprises an ant-inspired path integrator built on spiking neural networks and a bird-inspired multisensory fusion that uses Earth's magnetic field and polarised light. A rat-inspired third component creates spatial memory maps that update only while detecting landmarks.
