The GST Council led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday hiked the GST rate on mobile phones and certain parts to 18% from the current 12%. This was done to correct an inverted duty structure where mobile phones attracted a 12% GST rate, even as several parts that went into manufacturing them fell under the 18% rate bracket.
