At the 12th Academy Awards on February 29, 1940, the world witnessed a historic moment as Hattie McDaniel took the stage to clinch the first-ever Oscar won by a black person. The 46-year-old African American artiste received the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Mammy in the 1939 film Gone with the Wind.
