Heavily armoured crocodile ancestor lived before dinosaurs

A recent study revealed that aetosaurs, heavily armoured relatives of modern crocodiles, existed before dinosaurs, going extinct around 200 million years ago. The newly identified species, Garzapelta muelleri, likely omnivorous, had bony plates embedded directly into the skin, forming a mosaic-like structure. The study was published in The Anatomical Record.
