Long before pipelines reached the Himalayan villages of Uttarakhand, people walked down stone steps carved into the earth to collect water. Hidden beneath forests and temples, these water bodies, called Naulas, were located near oak forests. Their deep roots absorb rainwater and recharge underground springs that feed Naulas. Some of them still capture spring water and are revered by locals.
