Hierarchy of courts defines India’s judicial structure

India follows a structured judicial hierarchy from lower courts to the Supreme Court. Lower courts handle civil matters like small causes and munsif cases, while district courts function as district/sessions courts based on case type. Above them are High Courts with writ and review powers, and the Supreme Court as the apex body with original, advisory and appellate jurisdiction.
