A row erupted after a member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Sajjad Nomani claimed that Hindus are no longer a majority in the country when various communities are considered separately. "Under no circumstances can Hindus be considered a majority," India Today quoted him saying. He argued that several communities, including SCs and tribes, shouldn't be considered Hindus.
