Sunday wasn't always a weekly holiday in India. During British rule, workers had to toil 7 days a week. Labour leader Narayan Lokhande led a long struggle for rest for workers. After years of protests and petitions, the British declared June 10, 1890 as the first Sunday holiday, giving workers a weekly off that eventually became the norm across India.
