How and why do oysters make pearls?

Oysters make pearls as a defensive response to foreign objects, with the process being initiated when some foreign body, such as sand or a parasite, enters the oyster's shell. In response, it begins to deposit a substance called nacre, also known as mother of pearl. Over time, several layers of nacre are applied to the foreign body, forming a pearl.
