Government approved ₹37,500-crore scheme for the promotion of coal gasification projects. Coal gasification reduces pressure on foreign exchange reserves by substituting costly imports of critical fuels and industrial chemicals with products made from India's abundant domestic coal reserves. By converting coal into synthesis gas, India can domestically produce LNG, ammonia, methanol, and urea.
